Chapter VIII: Political Parties and Elections
Article 77
a. Since the essence of democracy is free competition of ideas expressed by political parties and political groups as well as by individuals, parties may freely be established to advocate the political opinions of the people. Laws, regulations, decrees or measures which might have the effect of creating a one-party state shall be declared unconstitutional.
b. All elections shall be by secret ballot as may be determined by the Elections Commission, and every Liberian citizen not less than 18 years of age, shall have the right to be registered as a voter and to vote in public elections and referenda under this Constitution. The Legislature shall enact laws indicating the category of Liberians who shall not form or become members of political parties.
The significance of a viable political party to democratic governance cannot be stressed enough. It creates the channel that voters use to learn about their rights and responsibilities, discuss issues that matter to them, participate in shaping the future that is good for their family, community and the country. More importantly, political parties empower citizens to vote and serve as a check on the other parties especially the governing party. A nation without fully functioning political parties or contrarian views does not only help to diminish democratic values, but it also stamps the perpetuation of one-party regime, dictatorship, and tyrannical governance.
LIPD applauds the efforts of political parties that operate in Liberia especially those that work tirelessly year in and year out to organize citizens, provide them the information that they need to make informed decisions about issues that matter to them and the future of their country.
We are partners and working together can only improve the way we communicate to and serve democratic governance and Liberian citizens.
